When “Science and Education” Go Bad

No known point of origin.

I recommend against sending articles to the publisher known as Science and Education Publishing, Science and Education, SciEP and Sciepub.com. It’s a sneaky publisher that lies about its location, gratuitously uses the term “American” in many of its journal titles, and copies titles from other publishers.

Recently, the publisher has been using several different names or brandings. Its earliest name was Science and Education Publishing, but later it dropped “Publishing.” Now it is also using an italicized SciEP and its web address, Sciepub.com as its branding.

I first blogged about this publisher on November 28, 2012 and think a new warning is warranted. I also blogged about one of its journals in July, 2015 after I learned that the editor-in-chief of one of its journals had been dead for two years.

My report from November, 2012 indicated the publisher had just launched with 85 titles. Now it has 116, many of which begin with the phrase, “American Journal of … ”

The publisher promises to complete peer review in a month or less “for most manuscripts.”

Its domain-name registration data is blinded, so I cannot figure out where it’s really based. If you know for certain the headquarters location of this publisher, please leave it in a comment below. Earlier guesses have included Nigeria, Romania, and China. If you know who the owner is, please share that information also.

The publisher claims to be based in Newark, Delaware, a claim that means it’s almost certainly based outside of the United States. If it lies about its true location, it’s likely lying about other things as well.

Its Facebook page hasn’t been updated since 2013.

Publishing an article in one of the 116 journals can cost as much as $500, so someone is making a lot of easy money with this publishing operation.

One of this publisher’s journal’s is the Journal of Food and Nutrition Research. This duplicates the title of a respected, impact-factor journal published in Slovakia:

I find Science and Education to be a completely dishonest and even counterfeit scholarly publisher. If you are a researcher, please do not submit any papers to any of its many journals.

If you are a university, please do not give any academic credit for papers appearing in this publisher’s 116 broad-scoped, open-access journals.
